Finding an Endocrinologist
Unfortunately, no endocrinologist in Ottawa specialize in the pituitary (according to my doctor, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong!). In my personal experience the Ottawa Endocrinology and Diabetes Centre at the Riverside Hopsital is the best concentration of pituitary knowledge in Ottawa. As an academic (teaching) hospital the doctors seems to be up to date on the latest information and may have more experience with less common conditions (just my guess).
MRI Wait Times
Ottawa has one of the longest wait times in the province (and maybe the country) for MRI scan. If you are just getting diagnosed and your doctor requests an MRI you may find waiting months to be unbearable. There ways to speed things up:
- Wait times vary significantly from hospital to hospital in Ottawa (between 52 and 173 days when I wrote this), so check the Ontario Wait Times website and see if you can schedule your MRI at a hospital with a short wait.
- Request an MRI after hours, between midnight and 7am. Most MRI's in Ottawa now run around the clock to keep up with demand. Ask the nurse or person booking your MRI about scheduling your MRI at night to get it sooner.
- Go to one of the private MRI clinics in Gatineau and get it done the next day. Cost is approximately $750-$1000 depending on what is required.
